Well, they’re not the glasses he’s famous for wearing as The Boy Who Lived in the Harry Potter films, but Daniel Radcliffe has donated the very first pair of spectacles he ever wore to an exhibit honoring victims of the Holocaust. Radcliffe wore the oval, metal-framed glasses when he was just six years old.
In case you’re wondering what old eyeglasses have to do with honoring Holocaust victims (because I certainly did), the exhibit is based on a famous WWII picture of a huge pile of glasses confiscated from the victims at Auschwitz.
Radcliffe’s mother is Jewish (and a Muggle, for any Potter-heads out there who might be wondering), which might have helped to influence his decision to get involved. The exhibit will mark National Holocaust Day on the 27th of this month in Liverpool, England. The hope is that Potter’s Radcliffe’s involvement will bring the attention of the younger generation to the symbolic artwork.
He might garner more attention by flying around on his broom and casting a couple of magic spells, but I’ve been told not to expect too much. Still, my fingers are crossed …
