December 2007

You are currently browsing the monthly archive for December 2007.

It’s New Year’s Eve, which means a planned night of staying up late, followed by a long day of lounging on the sofa recovering from the staying up late. I’m willing to bet that you will spend a lot of time and effort on your going out clothes, only to come home and pull on some sad old yoga pants for New Year’s Day. Am I right?

This year, resolve to spiff up your lounge wear. Choose pajamas that mimic day wear, like this set from Blue Lemon, which consists of a cardigan and pants and a tank in supersoft cotton knit. Choose pants and tees that are fitted but not tight; top with a slim cardigan or hoodie for warmth and coverage. Pair with some fuzzy slippers or embellished flip flops. Look for sleep wear that you can spend the day in, drinking coffee with house guests or playing board games with the kids. But don’t leave the house in this –they’re pajamas, after all. Just enjoy being at home.

Blue Lemon ribbed cardigan, tank, and pants available at Neiman Marcus. Long-sleeved tee also available.

Barron Hilton, head of Hilton Hotels, has pledged to donate 97 percent of his fortune to charity, namely through the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation. And how much is 97 percent, you ask? About $2.3 billion! He’ll put $1.2 billion immediately into a trust, and the rest will be distributed upon his death.

The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation (named for Barron’s father, who left the bulk of his fortune to charity upon his death) “seeks to alleviate the suffering of the world’s most disadvantaged, with a special emphasis on children and support for the work of the Roman Catholic Sisters.” Some of the programs the Foundation supports are associated with safe water development, blindness-related services and prevention, global work of the Catholic sisters, early childhood development, substance abuse prevention, and hotel and restaurant management education.

So what does this mean for the Hiltons with whom we’re most familiar? Paris, Nicky, and the rest of the Hilton clan will be left with $69 million to split amongst themselves. It’s been suggested that Grandpa Hilton is embarrassed by the antics of his granddaughters, but I prefer to believe that Barron is just following in his father’s footsteps and trying to set the best example he can for his family, and for the rest of the world.

thirsty eyesLike most women I have an ideal routine for my day, including a skin care regime. However, the reality of being able to keep my routine is not so predictable. I juggle so much in my day with two little ones, plus the always-wonderful unexpected events that come up. It seems like there will always be something I have to compromise. Usually, the “something” is my personal care.

On that note, the one step I cannot go without is applying my daily eye cream. I may not fit in the planned pedicure, but I will not sacrifice my “Eye Doctor” by Origins at a mere $28.50 (not bad when compared to other leading brands).

The eye area is so important to keep hydrated. There are no sweat or oil glands in the eye area so it is impossible to hydrate naturally, by drinking water. Like most gals, I want to grow old gracefully and I know I do have some control to make it happen! Since eyes “tell all,” eye skin care is critical.

The skin in the eye area is as thin as an eggshell. That is why it is very important to treat this area with the utmost care and gentleness. Too much pulling on your eye will wear out the elastin and in time your skin won’t bounce back. To apply your eye cream use your ring finger in a gentle tapping motion, in a C-like shape, from the brow bone down and under the eye on the highest point of your cheek bone. Also, wearing eye cream will noticeably improve the application and the payoff of your eye-shadow.

Happiness is taking time for your thirsty eyes . . .

Many people choose health-related resolutions for the New Year…and I suspect that diet and exercise rank at the very top of the behaviors many of us would like to improve.

Year after year, I drop more resolutions in the first week of January than I would like to admit. Some years I even refuse to make resolutions, telling myself that if I had more discipline I wouldn’t need them. Probably true.

This year is going to be different. I always liked the idea of a New Year’s Resolution because of the feel of a fresh start. Here are a few tips for creating successful resolutions:

  • Write it down. Keep your written resolution in a prominent place, like on the refrigerator or the steering wheel of your car.
  • Keep it focused. Instead of “I am going to eat healthier,” try something specific like “I will eat three fruits a day.”
  • Allow yourself some wiggle room. If you resolve to “exercise for an hour every day,” you will feel like a failure the first time you miss a day. Give yourself a range, like exercising three times a week.
  • Keep it practical. Lofty goals are harder to attain and will be abandoned sooner. Even if you need to lose 20 lbs., resolve to lose 5 or 10 pounds as an initial goal, so that you can actually succeed. You will be more motivated to keep going.
  • Reward the effort, not just the result. Sometimes the hardest part is just getting started, so if you splurge on your reward (just had to have those earrings) on your way to your goal, remember to add another teaser for the next level. Just be careful not to sabotage your efforts. (Ice cream is not an appropriate reward for following your diet!)
  • Share your ideas for healthy resolutions. Consider a weekly “salad day” at work and have each co-worker bring an ingredient for a big chef’s salad to share for lunch. Your friends will love it!

Remember that routines take time to change, so keep a positive outlook. When you lapse, plan to restart tomorrow or next week, just don’t wait until next year!

Send me your ideas for healthy resolutions and in a few weeks, lets see how we’ve done! Leave a comment, or e-mail me at chatterbox@noodleandboo.com. Questions on any other health issues? . . . Just ask!

Here’s to a Happy and Healthy New Year!

Earlier this week I wrote about Brad Pitt being one of the Top Five Green Celebrities of 2007, and he’s already making a strong case for himself for the next year. The Make it Right project, which Pitt founded and for which he is now fund raising, was developed after he filmed a movie in New Orleans and saw firsthand the devastation brought upon the city by Hurricane Katrina. After seeing how many people were still without homes, he resolved to make a difference.

A year ago, he brought together a group of experts to determine the best way to go about building eco-friendly, affordable housing on a large scale. It was decided that they would construct 150 homes using an affordable, sustainable building system that could be used over and over again. Pitt opted to center his project in the Lower 9th Ward, one of the most devastated areas in New Orleans.

Pitt spoke to Ann Curry on the Today Show last week about Make It Right, saying that actors like David Spade and Will Ferrell have contributed to his cause (Ferrell sponsoring an entire home), and that 12,000 people have made donations of some sort. On Thursday, an anonymous donation of $1 million was made.

Of the 150 homes Pitt plans to build, 52 have been adopted, giving homes to 52 families. And while that’s fantastic news, there’s only another month left of fundraising, and Make It Right has a long way to go. To learn more about the project, make a donation, or just to watch a video of Brad Pitt talking directly to you (totally worth it, I swear!), check out Make It Right Nola and see how you can help.

living on the edge

“happiness is living on the edge with friends”

submitted by Lindsay Skarda – Greeley, Colorado

In my twenty years of professionally shopping the infant and toddler industry I have been introduced to more hair accessory product lines than I can possibly count. While the craftmanship of art-to-wear clips, bands and bows all possessed their own unique charm, I felt like I could flip a coin and always win, as one hair bow collection was just as cute as the next. In all those years and hundreds of designs, only a few truly left a lasting impression due to the unique menagerie of embellishments of the designers. These were the chosen collections I would eventually purchase for the stores.

In my recent research for baby baubles I stumbled upon the most brilliant and innovative hair accessory collection I have seen in years, not to mention the epitome of girlie goodness and fuzzy charm. I am speaking of a Bay Area based company called GiddyGiddy. This hand-stitched, heart felt collaboration of tangle free snap clips is the work of former investment analyst Teri Dimalanta. GiddyGiddy prompts faces to light up like Christmas trees when they see wee little heads adorned with felt cupcakes, flowers and a seasonal favorite, the gingerbread man. Teri’s clips are so unique, I would challenge one to find another more functional and equally creative.

Teri’s inspiration was to tame her daughters hair which we can all relate, as our mane sometimes has a mind and spirit of its own and it all begins at a very young age! GiddyGiddy is designed to hold wisps and sprouts at bay on the crowns of babies and toddlers alike. My favorite way to sport GiddyGiddy is in multiples. It is simply impossible to select just one style; the more you buy, the more she will wear and the cuter she will look! The choices are endless, my personal favorites are the cupcakes, cherries and especially for this time of year, the snowman.

Celebrity babies are playing peek-a-boo with their tresses dressed in clips by GiddyGiddy as well. Moms such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Brooke Shields, Courtney Cox and Angelina Jolie are all satisfied customers. You can find GiddyGiddy in specialty boutiques all over the US as well as Internationally. Online you can find GiddyGiddy at PeanutButter & Lilly. Popular California boutiques such as Kitson in Los Angeles and Fiddlestix in San Francisco are just a few who giddy for GiddyGiddy. starbucksHave you ever had someone do something nice for you that was totally unexpected? I read on my Starbucks cup of such an act that happened at a drive-thru Starbucks. A driver chose to pick-up the tab for the car behind him. What happened next was a chain reaction in that for the following seven (7) cars, each driver chose to pay for the next person. I LOVED that story.

I do think that kindness can be contagious. Do you have a story where someone showed you unexpected kindness or a story where you had an opportunity to be the instigator of such an event?

I encourage you to be “an instigator” and report back on just how creative you are . . . . . karma my friend!

“Carpe diem, Seize the day . . . “ Horace

I’m writing this post on Christmas Eve, but by the time you all read it, Christmas will be over. I’m actually Jewish, but my husband is Lutheran, so we celebrate both Hanukkah AND Christmas. This is a boon for the kids in terms of gifts, but what I love most about it is the fact that I’ve gotten to adopt a whole new set of traditions into my life.

Christmas at the Wiley’s is a blast. We generally spend it in Toledo (my husband’s hometown), and that’s where we are this year as well. Christmas Eve is very low key. We hang out in the family room, watching A Christmas Story over and over, drinking fun cocktails, and playing games. We also get the kielbasa started. The kielbasa has to be fresh (not smoked) and in our family, it has to be from Stanley’s. Stanley’s is an old-fashioned Polish grocery store with the most amazing kielbasa you’ll ever taste. This stuff is beyond garlicky. Even double-bagged, it will make your entire refrigerator reek of garlic. But, oh man, it is so good. We cut it up into 2 inch chunks and put it in a slow cooker with beer. And we cook it on low overnight. In the morning, we have a feast of kielbasa, rye toast, pierogies and my husband’s special scrambled eggs (with lots of veggies mixed in). The kielbasa is best served with super spicy horseradish.

What do you guys eat for your holiday meals?

StingSting and wife Trudie Styler have put together wicker baskets filled with organic goodies to give this holiday season. And not just any old organic goodies — goodies from Sting’s farm! Who knew? Well, maybe you did, but I’m new to the party and terribly impressed.

The baskets contain cake, a variety of jams, beetroot chutney, as well as champagne, cassis, and candles. And all for about $300! Honestly, I think it’s a steal. However, in order to actually get one of these baskets (only 100 were made), I probably would have to steal one from somebody. A number of celebrities got in line way before I did to snatch one up, and I don’t really think I want to get into it with Sharon Osborne.

Sting hoped that the baskets would bring attention to the importance of buying locally grown foods. If you’re not sure why this is so important, I urge you to click here for more information. You know Sting would want you to …

Some of my best ideas come from children. Take today for example. While gathered around with family, my ten year-old daughter and my eight year-old nephew sequestered themselves in the dining room. When I inquired as to what they were doing, they informed me they were creating an art show. About an hour later they emerged announcing that admission to the show would be $0.25 per person. They had painstakingly labeled each piece of art with a ticket ranging from 5 cents to a dollar. When we entered the exhibit, we each wandered around selecting the pieces we would like to buy. When all was said and done, each adult had one painting from each artist. The children then decided they would donate a portion of their earnings to charity. Wow. The television was off, and time was spent painting, learning a little about economics, and having fun.

girl paintingAs adults, we often try to plan events and activities for our children. Today, I was again reminded that children have so many creative ideas on their own – we don’t always need to give directions. Children need to have ‘down time’ to create and problem-solve on their own, and in our busy world, most children have their schedules planned out for them. So during this two-week vacation, enjoy the wonder of your children and let them explore. I know you will be surprised with what they come up with…I would love to hear what your children teach you!

beautiful faceOn a whim, I entered and won Miss Sonoma County when I was a 17 year-old senior in high school. Just like most girls that age, I was insecure with my looks and almost a little embarrassed that I actually won. As I prepared for Miss California (which I didn’t win), I was scheduled to be photographed by a fairly well-known photographer. As I went through make-up and as the photographer set-up to take my picture, I was nervous. I’m not sure what I said, but I must have alluded to the fact that I wasn’t “that pretty.” I’m sure I was looking for reassurance.

Instead of telling me what I wanted to hear, “oh you are so pretty,” he told me what I needed to hear, and it has stayed with me, and is “the best” beauty advice I have ever received. Here is what he said:

“There is always going to be somebody who is prettier than you and there is always going to be someone who is not as pretty as you. Furthermore, beauty is subjective and what is pretty to one is not to another. Instead of focusing on whether or not you are attractive by social standards, focus on the inside.”

Yes, it may sound cliché, but as an impressionable teenager I took it to heart. After all, he was a “famous photographer.” He went on to say, “if you define yourself by how you look you will never be secure. Rather, define who you are by what you believe in and what you stand for.”

“How many cares one loses when one decides not to be something but to be someone.” Coco Chanel

I recently treated myself to a beautiful pair of chocolate-brown leather boots, because my usual ballet flats just aren’t going to cut it this winter. I wear a lot of skirts and dresses, and the boots give me the option to keep wearing them into the winter. So how do I keep my legs warm on truly frosty days?

Merino wool tights, of course!

Merino wool is light-weight but warm; it is also soft and not itchy, which is important for tights. Look for wool/cotton blends, with a little bit of spandex for stretch. I like Falke’s Soft Merino Wool tights, because they are lined with cotton, which means that your legs are pampered AND warm.

Match your tights to your boots or to your skirt or dress for a long, slim look, or choose bright colored tights for a pop of color. Hand wash merino wool tights inside out in cold water and hang to dry. Wear them with your knee-high boots and your ballet flats and your Wellies — anything to break out of the cold-weather sweater-and-jeans rut.

Falke Soft Merino Wool Tights, My Tights, $65.00; available in five neutral shades.

Leo DiCaprioLeonardo DiCaprio has been a proponent of eco-consciousness for years — he drives a hybrid car, has plans to establish an eco-hotel off the coast of Belize, and is even the leading name behind the feature-length documentary, The 11th Hour. And he still landed in the Number 3 spot in Green Daily’s recent list of the Top 5 Green Celebs of 2007. What’s a celebrity gotta do to earn the top spot?

Behind Leo in the 5 spot is Ed Begley, Jr., for being green before it was cool and continuing his commitment to the environment. He also currently has a show on HGTV about how to greenify your house.

Next comes Hayden Panettiere for her recent efforts on behalf of marine mammals. For a young star, she’s already shown a lot of courage and brought a huge amount of attention to a worthy cause.

Brad Pitt comes in second for his work in New Orleans — he’s donated his time, brainpower, starpower, and $5 million of his own money to get a green housing project started in the Lower 9th Ward, which was utterly devastated by Hurricane Katrina. He has worked with architects to not only create more eco-friendly homes for families in this area, but also to come up with solutions to flooding there (such as floating homes — brilliant!).

Can you imagine the credentials Number 1 must have? Well, he has won a Nobel Peace Prize, as well as an Emmy and an Oscar. Al Gore took the top spot with his amazing efforts toward bringing environmental problems into the public eye.

I hope these famous faces inspire even more celebrities to take action in the coming year. And kudos to those who made the list this year — it made not only a list, but a huge difference in the world.

Happiness is having someone cook (or order) for you . . .

SarahActually, these are a few of Sarah Skarda’s favorite things! Sarah is a freelance make-up artist (and mother to 2 beautiful little boys) who came up through the ranks at MAC Cosmetics and has always had wonderful suggestions in how to make even the most time-starved woman feel beautiful.

Here is what she had to say:

There are a few make-up staples that I cannot live without. I don’t have very much time but, like most gals, want to look as polished as possible. So, I have a “must have 3 list” for those who don’t have more than 5 minutes to apply make-up in the morning.

Number one! Find the “perfect bronzer” for your skin, not too orange and not too red. Red will give the skin a grayish payoff that will look dirty and the last thing you want is for someone to lick their finger and rub your cheek the way your mother used to in order to get dirt off your face! The bronzer I use for my skin tone and LOVE is Golden Bronzer by MAC. Bronzer gives that wonderful sun-kissed look but won’t make you too blushy or rosy. Apply bronzer with a large powder brush and stroke downward in small strokes towards the jaw on the cheek bone (no more of the 80′s streak line blushed look ladies). Also, apply in the T-zone and on the neck. Bronzer is something that you use to look polished, alive and “natural, not noticeable.”

mascaraNumber two! Get your favorite mascara. Use a black mascara to thicken your lash-line and to define your lashes . . . personally I never use any other color. My favorite mascara ranges from the typical $8 mascara from the local drugstore to my trusty Lancome Definicil Mascara. ALWAYS replace your mascara every 10 weeks, if you use it daily. Not only can you get an infection, but it dries out and becomes flakey and clumps your lashes together. Having a new mascara makes your application process easier and FASTER! Apply an even layer on your lashes and try to separate the lashes by using very small back and forth movements. If you get mascara on your skin while applying it, let the mascara dry completely, then flake it off with your fingernail. NEVER try to get mascara off when it is wet.

Number three! Find a great gloss that you are comfortable with, both in color and shine. Some of my girlfriends hate gloss because their hair sticks to it or they just don’t like the thicker texture and look. In that case, find a tinted lip moisturizer to substitute for gloss. The reason I say a gloss is a “must have” is because it is one thing you can re-apply without the use of a mirror, there are many colors to choose from, and it dresses up a natural and virtually makeup-less look. I LOVE the juicy tubes by Lancome or Lip Glass by MAC. Try a reddish hue for the holidays and your friends will think you took forever to get ready! Apply directly on or use your fingertip to smear it on. Usually brands will sell wonderful sets for the holidays at reduced prices.

Now is the time to “buy and try” for your new years, “new look” resolution.

Oh, to sleep like a baby…it does sound wonderful, doesn’t it? But as adults, sometimes we just don’t have enough time for sleep. And if we are busy or stressed, our sleep may not be as restful.

We may not sleep 15 to 18 hours like most infants and toddlers, but sleep is just as important for our well-being and health. Inadequate sleep in adults saps energy, dampens our mood, inhibits memory and mental sharpness, decreases productivity, and even affects our immune system. We are more likely to get sick when we are “run down” (tired, fatigued, or exhausted).

So wake up! The National Sleep Foundation offers some tips for healthy sleep:

  • Keep regular sleep times. Don’t “sleep in” more than an hour or so on weekends or you may upset your internal clock, which sets our sleep and awake cycles.
  • Exercise regularly. It’s easier to fall asleep, as long as you finish exercising a few hours before bedtime.
  • Establish a relaxing bedtime routine. I love this tip…what’s not to like about a warm bath, soothing music, and a good book before bed?
  • Create the right sleep environment. Have a comfortable bed in a room that is dark, quiet and cool. (And don’t bring a stack of work reports to review in bed.)
  • Eat earlier. A meal too close to bedtime disturbs sleep.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol late at night. Caffeine is a stimulant and triggers wakefulness, sometimes lasting up to 12 hours. Alcohol may be sedating, but also disrupts normal sleep so you will feel less rested.
  • See your doctor for ongoing problems with sleep or excessive daytime sleepiness. If you have an underlying medical problem or sleep disorder, your doctor can help.

I wish all of you healthy and happy holidays. And for those travelers who will be driving, remember to get enough sleep before you drive so that you arrive safely!

Happiness is…Zzzzzzzzz..…zzzzzz.

Gwen StefaniGwen Stefani is one smart rock star. After the wildfires in San Diego, she wasn’t sure how to proceed with a concert she had scheduled in the area. Initially, she felt she should cancel it out of respect, but upon further consideration, she realized she could do more good for the community by holding the concert and donating the proceeds than she could by canceling. And donate she did — Stefani gave over $160,000 from the October 30 concert to the San Diego fire-relief fund.

This was the birth of the Gwen Stefani After-the-Fires Scholarship, aiming to help students who lost their homes or jobs in the devastating fires. I think it’s great to see a celebrity put such an emphasis on education — we can’t all make a living with our singing voices!

Details, such as how many students will be eligible for the scholarship, have yet to be determined. However, interested students can download the Common Scholarship Application for scholarships offered by the San Diego Foundation by clicking here, where they’ll have the opportunity to apply for over 75 scholarships through just one application.

Having children has been the single largest life-changing event for me. It reaches far beyond the obvious into how I see the world and the people in it. The love and vulnerability that I experienced the first time I held my babies is indescribable. As a homelessmother I have made a lifetime commitment to my children, to love them and to be there for them, no matter what happens, no exceptions.

After having children, when I see a homeless person I think, “that is somebody’s baby,” and my heart goes out to them.

When they ask for money, do I always give it? No, not always . . . until now. A couple weeks ago, I was traveling on business and I was lost. I was in a big city, standing on a busy corner with my GPS trying to talk on my cell phone, late for an important meeting, and a homeless man came up to me and asked for money. I shook my head no and turned my back to him. As I found my building and was riding up the elevator to the thirteenth floor, I thought to myself “is this meeting more important than helping that man?” The answer was no. Nothing is more important than another person, no matter what the story is . . .

CakeI work on the 63rd floor of a high rise building in downtown Chicago. The elevator rides are long and tedious, but I pass the time by watching TV. Sadly, it’s not anything too compelling. The elevator network is called Captivate, and they broadcast weather, stock information and news snippets all day long. Earlier this week, on my way down to the lobby, I caught a news blurb about holiday parties and kids. Apparently “event planners” (not sure which ones) have decided that the making and decorating of holiday cookies is destroying today’s youth. Their suggestion? Instead of sugar cookies, have your kids create cutouts of whole wheat bread. They can then “frost” the bread with fat-free cream cheese and decorate these delicacies with colorful veggies. Say what?

Now, don’t get me wrong. I am all for wholesome eating. But this is ridiculous. The making of cookies is a holiday tradition that children will remember for their entire lives. And we are supposed to get rid of it?

I realize that childhood obesity is a growing problem, but this isn’t the solution. Let’s get soda out of our schools, and substitute fresh fruit for junky after-school snacks. I’m all for that! But the once a year traditions? The family memories? Those are sacred.

I wonder what the food police would have had me make in lieu of the pretty Hanukkah cake that my daughter and I created last week.

JK RowlingJ.K. Rowling knows what it’s like to need help, and now that she’s in a position to give back, she does so in a big way. In 2005, she used her success from the Harry Potter series and created the Children’s High Level Group, an organization dedicated to improving “the welfare of vulnerable children across Europe … ” by focusing on health, education, and welfare.

She recently auctioned off one of just seven handwritten copies of a “secret” Harry Potter book, The Tales of Beetle the Bard at Sotheby’s. For those of you who didn’t run out and buy the seventh and final installment of the Harry Potter series the moment it went on sale and don’t know what this is, The Tales of Beetle the Bard is the book Albus Dumbledore gave to Hermione Granger in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (and if you don’t know who Dumbledore and Hermione are, you are missing out, my friend).

So what? She auctioned off one book. Big deal, right?

That one book raised over $3.9 million dollars. So, yes, it is a big deal. The money will help the Children’s High Level Group charity, through The Children’s Voice campaign, to improve the lives of thousands of children in need.

Thank you, J.K. Rowling, for bringing some real magic into the world.

Short days, long to-do lists, and cold, snowy weather can make the holidays more of a slog than a celebration. Often all of the planning and shopping and doing for others can leave a girl desperate for a long nap. This holiday season, pamper yourself with a little bit of practical luxury. Wrap up in a cozy cashmere shawl; it’s the next best thing to spending all day in bed.

A cashmere wrap is incredibly versatile; wear it over your LBD for cocktails and dinner, or with jeans and a turtleneck for Saturday errands. Cashmere is soft and warm and light-weight; it is easy to pack in your carry-on bag for that last-minute flight home or to toss in your work tote for long days at the office. Choose a wrap in a neutral color if your wardrobe tends to be bright; opt for a beautiful pattern if you wear mostly solids. A brightly colored wrap will pop against your simple black dress or over a basic white shirt.

Look for streamlined styles without any details, or for beautiful embellished wraps with cables or fringe or beading. But limit yourself to ONE embellishment, and remember that fringe and beads are more appropriate for evening than for day. The most versatile option is a wrap like the one pictured here; the beautiful color and simple line make this a timeless and versatile choice.

Care for your cashmere or pashimina wrap in the same way you care for your cashmere sweaters: hand wash in cold water and baby shampoo, roll in a towel to absorb excess water, and dry flat.

Senior writer for Celebrity Baby Blog and Mommies With Style, Nancy Johnson Horn was 30 weeks pregnant when she requested Glowology products to review. She was a perfect candidate to review our line as they are developed to be 100% safe for pregnant and nursing moms.

pregnantHere’s what she had to say, “Heading into my 30th week of pregnancy, my ankles are getting more swollen every minute. And my feet are getting so dry! What can I do to fix this?

Well, Noodle & Boo, very well known for taking care of the sensitive skin for the playground set (also a celeb fave for their kids) recently started a line for expecting mamas called Glowology. They sent me two products to review, The Balm and the Elasticity Oil. Both are organic and I’m in love with them!

The Balm ($24 for 6.5 oz) actually moisturizes my feet and feels wonderful. You can also use it on your hands. Made with oh-so-rich organic shea butter, sunflower oil and with a blend of billberry, lemon, orange, sugar cane and sugar maple extracts, it smells amazing (but I like that it works!) It also kept the moisture in for hours (something the other oillotions I’ve used just don’t do). Treat your feet to this, whether you’re pregnant or not! I do not let it out of my sight!

I’m also using their Elasticity Oil ($42 for a 4 oz bottle) to nourish my itchy belly and bust. You can also add it to your bath. This heavenly oil contains sunflower and jojoba seed oil, with a little honey, calendula (to calm the skin) and grape seed oil (to soothe). Also smells delicious and works well!

Noodle & Boo also have some other great products in their new line, I’d love to try. Check out the Perfecting Creme ($62) – to reduce stretch marks and the Afterglow Gel – to firm and slim the skin.”

Glowology products are availabe at Neiman Marcus.

Happiness is being so close to meeting the little person of your dreams . . .

Holiday parties, shopping until the wee hours, frantic dashes to my home office to wrap gifts in between homework and other family fun…everything is going along as planned, until BAM!- misbehavior from my little one. As adults, we can more easily go with the flow during this hectic time of year (and sometimes even the best of us struggle with this one!), but through the eyes of a three year old, the whole season can be a little daunting. So, what is a mommy to do?

Three quick fixes for our little ones:

  • Attempt to keep the family routine as normal as possible. Try to stagger events and evenings out, and most importantly, keep bedtimes and bedtime rituals the same. Consistency calms children and makes them feel safe.family christmas
  • Announce activities or events in advance. Just like you, children want to know what the evening will be like before leaving the house in the morning. Have a children’s calendar posted in a clearly visible spot where you explain the events of the day, and preferably the events of the week, far enough in advance so that there is plenty of time for plans to sink in. Surprises are meant for birthdays, not for who is picking up from preschool.
  • Create a few family traditions at a time. Too many activities can have an adverse effect, thus creating some negative behaviors. Also keep in mind that the anticipation of an event is often just as exciting as the actual event, so give your children plenty of time to look forward to special family happenings. You may want to limit participation according to your children’s ages. For example, the older kids go to the Nutcracker Ballet while the younger ones stay home with a trusted babysitter.

Remember, if mom and dad take a minute to breathe, the whole family will relax and enjoy the magical moments of the season. Its not how much you do, but how much fun you have doing it.

stomach Juli B – San Francisco is a lifestyle and luxury blog . . . a new fav of Harper’s Bazaar . . . has this to say about Glowology’s Perfecting Creme for stretch mark control:

proclaim your radiance. the noodle and boo glowology perfecting crème ($62) is the prod to keep you feeling like your old self. or young self, for that matter. this 3.5-ounce tube squeezes out nothing but goodness. collagen synthesizers and fibronectin (we don’t know what it is but sounds good) helps to reduce stretch marks. also great for the pregger ones. available at neiman marcus.

MirrenSeveral of my favorite celebrities from across the pond, such as Dame Helen Mirren and Helena Bonham Carter, are promoting Oxfam’s Unwrapped campaign with a hilarious commercial encouraging people to give thoughtful gifts this holiday season. You know, like fertilizer and condoms.

Huh?

It’s not as strange as it sounds. Oxfam Unwrapped is a way for people to purchase gifts online that will benefit needy families and communities. And so, for a community struggling with HIV, the gift of condomsCarter isn’t all that strange. Fertilizer that will help a family grow vegetables to feed their community will bring more happiness to that family than another goofy tie will to your husband.

You can also purchase a goat, drinking water, toilets, dinners, tools, and much more. For a comprehensive list of available gifts and for more information on how the program works, click here. You might be a little late to give the gift in time for Christmas, but need doesn’t stop on December 26.

Especially in the winter months, I see sick children every day. And while I can’t say that I never get a cold, it is not often.

My secret is really very simple…good hand washing. Germs (viruses and bacteria) are usually transmitted by direct contact. And that almost always means hands…your hands or someone else’s hands.

Viruses and bacteria can live on surfaces for hours. In the course of a day we touch hundreds of surfaces…we shake hands with co-workers, we take change from the store clerk, we push a shopping cart, we open doors. The list goes on and on.

In my pediatric office, I wash my hands dozens and dozens of times every day. It takes a little more effort when I’m not at work, but one of the most important times I never miss hand washing is before eating or handling food. Every virus and bacteria we come in contact with all morning lands in our mouths at lunch time if we don’t wash before eating that sandwich or slicing that apple.

We all know to wash our hands every time after using the bathroom, but if you’re in a public place, save the paper towel to open the door on your way out. At home this winter, give everyone their own color-coded hand towel and drinking cup in the bathroom (and wash them frequently). You may find that you won’t be sharing every cold your child brings home!

Waterless gel cleansers? These products are very effective in killing germs, but they are mostly alcohol and can be extremely drying. Use cleansing cloths for hands in the car or at the gym, anywhere without a sink. After all that washing, use lotions to moisturize your hands, but if they do get chapped and need real work, then add ointments at bedtime.

My favorites: I use Noodle and Boo Super Soft Lotion or the new Glowology Lovely Body Lotion for moisturizing by day. For problem hands I’ll add The Balm or even Ultimate Baby Ointment; they really work! And for waterless cleansing, try the Ultimate Cleansing Cloths.

Paris HiltonParis Hilton has made some choices in her life that make her a questionable role model for today’s young ladies, but she’s made a few really positive moves lately, and she should be recognized for those, too. Earlier this week she made the announcement that she’s becoming more environmentally conscious, and has replaced the light bulbs in her home with energy-efficient bulbs (can you imagine how many bulbs that must be?) and she’s buying a hybrid car, like, right now.

In addition to that, Hilton has made a practice of turning off the lights and TVs in her house when she leaves, saying, “These are little things that people can do every day to make a huge difference.”

She mentioned all this during a trip this week to Berlin where she is currently promoting a new sparkling wine sold in cans (I know, I’m going to miss the popping of the cork, too). What she didn’t mention was that 20% of sales from the new drink, made by German company Rich Prosecco, will benefit organizations focused on developing clean sources of drinking water.

Cheers to that!

When a person becomes stressed, the level of the body’s stress hormone (cortisol) rises. blond girlThis in turn causes an increase in oil production, which can lead to oily skin, acne and other related skin problems. Even those with skin that is not affected by acne tend to develop temporary stress-related acne due to increased oil production.

In fact, a study in the January 2001 issue of the Archives of Dermatology entitled Psychological Stress Perturbs Epidermal Permeability Barrier Homeostasis, found that “stress has a negative effect on the barrier function of the skin, resulting in water loss that inhibits the skin’s ability to repair itself after an injury.”

Specifically, the study involving 27 medical, dental and pharmacy students examined how periods of higher stress (in this case, during final examinations) impacted the skin’s response to repeated stripping of cellophane tape on the subjects’ forearms vs. periods of lower stress (such as after returning from winter vacation). Researchers found that it took longer for the skin to recover from the minimally invasive tape stripping during periods of perceived higher stress than during less stressful periods.

“This study was the first of its kind to suggest what dermatologists anecdotally have known for years – that psychological stress adversely affects the normal functions of the skin,” said Dr. Mayoral. “While the subjects in this study did not have any pre-existing skin conditions, I would suspect that people with skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis would have been even more adversely affected by this experiment.”

Learn to recognize the underlying problem that is triggering your symptoms and develop skills to help minimize the stress.

1. Exercise helps release endorphins in the body that can reduce stress.
2. Avoid very hot showers or baths.
3. Moisturize as soon as possible after bathing.
4. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher daily to protect your skin from sun exposure.

Eva MendesPETA sure is good at getting gorgeous celebrities to take off their clothes.

Eva Mendes recently doffed her duds to protest the use of fur in fashion, saying, “There are way too many amazing faux-fur options out there for people to still be wearing real fur.” The sexy starlet is just the latest in a line of Hollywood actresses to partake in PETA’s “Fur is Dead” ad campaign — Alicia Silverstone, Christina Applegate, and Pamela Anderson and more have stripped down for animal rights, each of them saying, “Fur? I’d rather go naked.”

Eva admits that she didn’t always understand the cruelty behind the fur industry, but once PETA made her aware of how a fur wrap she wore to a premiere came to be, she vowed to get involved with their organization. And judging by the attention her posterior poster is getting, I would have to say both PETA and her fans are happy as can be about it!

There has been a ton of controversy lately about some books written to get your kids to eat a more well-rounded diet. I have some very definite opinions about the theories in these books (hint: I don’t like them), but that’s for another post. Today, I’d like to share with you the books that I recommend for encouraging a love of food in your child. These aren’t cookbooks; rather, they are story and picture books that are all about food.

Little Pea This is an adorable book targeted to three- and four-year olds. Little Pea has a great life with his Pea family, but hates eating dinner! Every night, he must eat five pieces of yucky candy in order to get a giant bowl of his favorite dessert; spinach!!My daughter loved this book when she was that age (she is now six) – it made her laugh everytime we read it, and it’s a fun way to get across the message that it’s important to eat healthy foods.

The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog! If you haven’t experienced the brilliance that is Mo Willems, you are going to love me. His writing is hysterical, and little kids (two- and three-year olds especially) totally take a shine to his prose and characters. In this book, Pigeon finds a hot dog on the street and is subsequently accosted by a very curious (and hungry) little duckling.

My Food / Mi Comida You don’t get much simpler than this little board book, but sometimes simple is all that a little kid needs. This book covers colors, foods, English and Spanish. My daughter loved it when she was two, and now my son is totally digging it. The best page according to both of them? The one with a beautiful chocolate ice cream cone!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar This classic favorite by Eric Carle is a great way to get even the littlest book lovers excited about food. I love the way Carle combines the healthy (plums! apples!) with the decadent (chocolate cake and pickles!)

Two Old Potatoes and Me A girl finds two old potatoes in her kitchen and she and her dad cut them up and plant them in the garden. The book (with great prose and charming illustrations) takes the reader through the entire planting and growing process and finishes with a mashed potato recipe. I love that this is a story about a daughter and her father (there aren’t many out there). It’s also a nice book for kids with divorced parents, as it does a good job of addressing the issues that are faced by kids with two homes.

I Will Never Not Ever Eat a Tomato Fans of the Disney Channel will recognize this Charlie and Lola title. Older brother Charlie helps ease his picky little sister Lola into adventurous eating by weaving fantastical tales about all of the food in their refrigerator.

Do YOU have any favorite children’s books about food? Please share them in the comments!

To kick things off, I’ve posted a picture that brings me joy, Andrew and Matthew (aka Noodle and Boo) playing in the waves in front of the Moana Hotel, Oahu, Hawaii.

I recently wrote about Britney Spears and promptly received a call from a dear friend. She was concerned that it might reflect poorly on ChatterBox to mention Britney as her Britney 2reputation is somewhat tarnished. I too cannot escape the never-ending trail of pictures and tid-bits about Britney in the press. I do not deny that by all accounts it appears that she could be making better choices.

The point of Princess Diana and Britney Spears is . . . it is never too late to change. Every person, every day makes choices that ultimately add up to his/her destiny. Britney is young, a mere twenty-six years old. It has been a bumpy road, but on any given day she can make a choice to do things differently. Yes, she has the paparazzi chasing her. Yes, she lives in a fish bowl. But, so did Princess Diana and look how she used her power for good.

The comparison between Princess Diana and Britney Spears came to mind because at this time, Britney Spears sells more magazines than any other celebrity. Jennifer Aniston and a few others are close behind. I thought back to other notable times when a celebrity presence in the press was at an all time high. I thought about Princess Diana’s wedding and when she passed away. Granted we are talking about the “People’s Princess,” the “Queen of Hearts,” the “Princess of Wales.” While there are many reasons to admire Princess Diana, her desire to help people is what endeared her to me the most. What an excellent role model for someone who has “the power” and “the choice” and only needs direction.

“I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.” Albert Schweitzer

Embellished flats are huge for spring, but there’s no reason to wait for warmer weather to work this trend. The holidays are the perfect time to bring a little glitter to your wardrobe.

Flats come in a variety of shapes; look for pointy toes or flat-toed ballet styles, or the traditional ballet flat. Look also for peep toes, like the Christian Laboutin’s pictured here; wear with black tights for colder nights and with bare toes when it warms up. Go with tights, though, not pantyhose — you want the look to be funky and intentional.

Embellishment can be anything from a wee bow to a gigantic fur pom pom. Larger embellishments work best with skirts, while more minimal embellishment is a nice touch for jeans or tailored trousers.

Don’t confine your glittery flats to the holidays; wear them any time you need a little sparkle. Embellished shoes are a simple way to spiff up your everyday wardrobe. Pair embellished ballet flats with knee-length skirts, or peep toes with wide-leg trousers. And remember that EVERYTHING goes with your jeans.

MickeyA nice review from beauty expert Mickey Williams at BeautyBakery. Mickey says: “This lotion is considered a luxury inlotion the body beauty world and it’s not just for its super smooth texture and flirty smell.

Glowology glimmers with other benefits like being solely created with the sensitive flesh in mind. I recommend Glowology Lovely Body Lotion as a fall to winter product. It’s a nice complement when the nights get colder and your honey gets closer.

Nourishing milk protein, almond oil and clover honey leave skin sweetly soft.”

Happiness is having someone to cuddle with . . .

haydenimages.comShe might be small in stature, but Heroes star Hayden Panettiere sure has a big heart. The actress recently traveled to Japan to protest the “brutal and unneccessary slaughter” of marine mammals, risking her life in an attempt to defend several dolphins.

She stated that the personal risks were minimal compared to the good that could come of her actions, and she brushes off talk that an arrest warrant has been issued for her as a result of the confrontation she and a number of other activists had with fishermen while there, saying, “I’d do it again … Very possibly, might do it again.”

The girl certainly has garnered loads of attention worldwide for Save the Whales Again! campaign, most recently by publishing a condescending letter she received from the Japanese Government Fisheries Agency along with her response. Panettiere not only told Japan what she thought of their practices — she spent time in our nation’s capitol this past weekend at The Weather Channel’s Forecast Earth Summit telling the rest of the world about her involvement in saving marine mammals.

She also sold t-shirts to raise funds for nature charities. To use her fame to full effect, the slogan on the t-shirts played off the slogan from her hit TV show Heroes, reading, “Save the Whales, Save the World!”

Okay, I am back in the “mommy during the holidays” mode, which means, that although I would like to sip hot chocolate on the couch while reading a book with my children, for today, I need to get some Christmas shopping done!!! The mad dash is clearly in full force. So, if you don’t have leisure time to peruse the children’s section looking for good books, here are three favorites.

The Seven Silly Eaters by Mary Ann Hoberman. Great rhyming story that keeps children entertained. I like to have my three year old guess the words at the end of each rhyme. This one is sure to please.

Enemy Pie by Derek Munson. This book appeals to me as a principal, teacher and mom. The illustrations are adorable, and the story is fantastic- I read this one to all my students at school. This simple story shows how to get rid of enemies for good. First graders through sixth graders will enjoy.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney. This is the hottest book around. My 10 year-old daughter devoured this book in a matter of hours. Funny and engaging, it is also a quick read. I think even the most reluctant reader will enjoy this one.

What are YOUR favorite children’s books?

courtneyA review from BeautyNewsLA. We are glad that Glowology is a new fav!!! Here’s what beauty expert Courtney Kretchman had to say:

This month, the educated editors at BeautyNewsLA have found love in studying Glowology. Positively defined as “the art of celebrating the beauty in every woman,” Glowology is a luxury line of skincare by Noodle & Boo dedicated to women who are “expecting” or have sensitive skin.

Whether brought on by stress, hormones, weather or any handful of reasons, skin can become more sensitive with age. Glowology products have been developed with natural ingredients that are moisturizing and regenerating, to relieve, calm and reduce symptoms of easily irritated skin. Specially selected ingredients improve skin’s tolerance level, while also helping to reinforce its barrier to outside influences.

The Sugar Mama Honey Scrub was a unanimous favorite amongst the BNLA women. honey childEven those of us who didn’t claim any skin sensitivity issues couldn’t seem to get enough of the honey and shea butter whipped body scrub. It’s even sold as a boxed duo called Honey Child, packaged with the Sugar Mama Honey Bar. Gentle enough for little ones too, the moisturizing bath bar smells amazing and is said to balance skin’s natural pH level.

We also couldn’t wait to pick up the Repair Kit for our pregnant pals. The bow-tied embossed box set includes Glowology’s Perfecting Crème, a formula to control and prevent stretch marks, and Afterglow Gel to firm and tone the skin.

From packaging to product, we can’t say enough about Glowology. We only wish we’d studied it sooner…

Available at Neiman Marcus, Beverly Hills.

fancy billGIVING, How Each of Us Can Change the World, by Bill Clinton, was my reading material on a recent trip to Dallas, Texas. What an amazing review of people in action, making the world a better place, one step at a time.

I have often wondered why some people choose to help others and some do not. I have my own theories, but was interested in what President Clinton thought. Here is what he said, “. . . it seems to me we all give for a combination of reasons, rooted in what we think about the world in which we live and what we think about ourselves. We give because we think it will help people today or give our children a better future; because we feel morally obligated to do so out of religious or ethical convictions; because someone we know and respect asked us; or because we find it more rewarding and more enjoyable than just spending money on material possessions or more time on recreation or work.”bill in africa

Clinton asks the question, “Will giving make you happier?” He continues, “Who’s happier? The uniters or the dividers? The builders or the breakers? The givers or the takers? I think you know the answer. There’s a whole world out there that needs you, down the street or across the ocean. Give.” What rhetoric . . .

Giving is an inspiration and a call to action. When you read what others are doing it will help you see that giving can be done in so many ways, big and small (both matter). While people like Warren Buffet and Bill and Melinda Gates are amazing, ordinary people, like you and me, can change the world too.

Happiness is making a difference. Let’s . . .

Nicole Richie is giving it away … to expectant needy mothers and families, that is. She and Joel Madden, the father of her unborn baby, donated the gifts they received from their baby shower to 100 families who needed the swag more than they did. The gifts, along with any funds raised, were donated through the Los Angeles Free Clinic on behalf of the newly-established Richie Madden Children’s Foundation.

Guests included Paris and Nicky Hilton, Rashida Jones, and Natalie Cole, just to name a few. The theme of the shower was Wizard of Oz and was evident in details such as a yellow brick road (natch) and ruby slipper centerpieces. It didn’t stop there, though — a live band played classic ditties from the movie throughout the afternoon.

This altruistic move by Nicole is the latest in a recent trend that leads me to believe she’s truly growing up. It wasn’t very long ago that she was headed down a scary path of drugs and danger, but it seems that since her pregnancy she’s been willing to take her place in the world as a responsible adult. Perhaps this behavior will rub off on the rest of young Hollywood — fingers crossed!

mother and son readingHot chocolate, a warm blanket, fluffy socks, pj’s and some steaming cups of hot cocoa… perfect!!! The only thing that would make it better is adding your children and some good books. Slowing down with our children during the holidays is one way to make the season memorable. Although children are on a break from school, keeping up with reading everyday is SO important. Need some ideas on how to engage your child in reading during the holidays? Here are a few:

  • Make a basket of holiday related books. Each year you can bring out the basket just like you do your ornaments and other decorations. As your collection grows each year, it is fun for children and parents alike to revisit old favorites. Opening the basket of books can be a much anticipated event that easily becomes a family tradition.
  • It is extra special if you add a new book to the basket each year, allowing each child to sign and date the book as a future keepsake for mom and dad.
  • Visit the library and have your child apply for a library card. Be on the lookout for special family read aloud nights. While there, your child can select some books to “visit” your holiday book basket.
  • Everyone in the family gets a new book to read during the holidays. Take turns sharing out key concepts like main characters, plot and setting.
  • Be a good role model for your child. Let him/her see YOU read for pleasure. Children rarely see their parents read, and yet we tell them it is the most important thing they can learn to do!! Try to plan some family reading time, just like you would plan a trip to the movies. Spread a big blanket out on the floor, pop some popcorn and have each family member bring a few good books. Set a time limit before you start (15 minutes is PLENTY at first!) You want the time to be meaningful, not overwhelming. For younger children, use this time as read aloud time.

You will be surprised how easy it is to establish family traditions that involve reading.

Happiness is reading with your child . . .

Winter is on its way…brisk days and pink cheeks, hot cider and gingerbread, shopping for December holidays…and what else? Flu shots!

As a pediatrician, I am often asked if flu shots are a good idea for kids…and the answer is YES! For many, a flu shot can be life-saving.Flu Shot…or Not?

Even so, some people wonder if it isn’t better to get the illness to boost our immunity “the old-fashioned way”. The answer is definitely no! For the very young and very old, flu can be very serious. Even the strongest of us wilt after days of high fever, chills, muscle aches, cough and congestion (yuk!).

The flu vaccine is a great idea for all of us, and it is especially important for children between 6 months and age 5. For babies less than 6 months old, make sure all family members and caretakers have had the flu vaccine to help protect the infant until he or she is old enough for the vaccine.

Some parents worry that the flu shot will cause the flu, but there is no risk at all of getting the illness from the flu shot. The shot is a “killed” vaccine, which means that the influenza virus is inactivated and cannot cause an infection. Side effects, such as soreness or mild fever, sometimes occur but usually disappear within 24 to 48 hours. The nasal spray, FluMist, is a live vaccine, so it is possible to have mild symptoms like a cold as a reaction to this vaccine. FluMist is not approved for children younger than age 2.

Since it is already December, is it too late to get a flu vaccine? Not at all. Earlier is better, since the flu season can start in late November, and last through March or April. The vaccine is effective within about two weeks, and immunity should last at least six months or more. So don’t delay!

This is the first in a series of “Winter Health Tips”. Next week…”Why Doesn’t the Doctor Get Sick?” I am eager to hear from you, so please share your comments and questions!

You may ask, what do Princess Diana and Britney Spears have in common? Actually a handful of things: high profile, beautiful, blond, two sons . . . but the one thing that stands out most in my mind is the “power of the press.”

Princess Diana was photographed constantly (like Britney Spears). She, however, chose Princess Dianato use her visibility to help people and to bring visibility to causes that might otherwise never be covered by the press. Credited in helping to breakdown the prejudices associated with HIV, she said, “HIV does not make people dangerous to know, so you can shake their hands, and give them a hug. What’s more you can share their homes, their workplaces and their playgrounds and toys.” Lady Harlech noted, “She was the first important person in Britain to show you can touch an AIDS victim and not catch it. One cannot overestimate the importance of what Princess Diana did that day.”

Princess Diana reached out to landmine victims, alcohol and drug addicts, the homeless, those with leprosy and many more. She was photographed talking, touching and hugging the untouchables, the social outcasts and those who needed it most.

Princess Diana is quoted as saying, “Helping people in need is a good and essential part of my life, a kind of destiny. Everybody needs to be valued. Everyone has the potential to give something back.”Britney

Britney Spears has had a tough year. She is twenty-six years old; ten years younger than Princess Diana when she died. While many have criticized her recent choices, it is not over. Her face on the cover of a magazine generates more sales than 99% of the celebrities out there. She, like Princess Diana, has the power of the press. Just imagine what she could do if she chose Princess Diana as a role model and used her power for good.

What a nice write-up at people.com on our new line, Glowology, developed especially for women with sensitive skin.

“Stars like Jennifer Garner and Liv Tyler love to suds up their kids using only the best Sugar Mama Honey Scrubwith Noodle & Boo’s line of ultra-gentle baby soaps and shampoos. But when the company found out that the little ones weren’t the only ones appreciating the products, they created a new line for all those moms who couldn’t resist sampling the products themselves. Glowology uses the same gentle ingredients as the children’s line, but in a way that’s definitely all grown up. The mild scent of Heavenly Honey Wash floats away stress, while the Lovely Body Lotion keeps skin moisturized without greasiness. And our favorite, the Sugar Mama Honey Scrub, contains gentle exfoliants to buff your way to baby-soft skin. Best of all, the company donates 20% of their profits to children’s charities. We can’t think of a more perfect holiday gift for all those caring moms on our list.”

Happiness is baby-soft skin . . .

Chilly days are now upon us, “fear not” I say as tots are suddenly appearing donned with irresistible, however, fashionable chapeaus with style and whimsicality! These “mopped topped” tykes are spotted in playgrounds, pre-schools, birthday parties, family outings and even in their own backyards.

I am speaking of an innovative, new children’s hip and luxurious accessory company called Zooni. This San Francisco-based sibling duo have made quite a stir in the children’s wear market. They launched their fashion-meets-fun collection of hats in a fall ’07 kids show last year. Word spread like wildfire as these adorable designs found homes in retailers such as Fred Segal, Giggle, and m. fredric, as well as 70+ more specialty boutiques across the nation.

These fuzzy and unique hats are the successful results of an inspiration had by sisters Michelle and Melissa Jeong. These creative and genius sisters were passionate about creating a line that would celebrate childhood and offer a uniqueness and individuality to each child who wears a Zooni hat. The sassy presence and the flare of couture has embellished the heads of children of popular celebs such as Kate Hudson, Jennifer Garner, Heidi Klum, Courtney Cox, Katie Holmes and Angelina Jolie, just to name a few!

These hats are not only full of expression, they are warm and functional. The trademark for Zooni is a swirl which is called a “Koru” which means “Circle of Life” so appropriate for moms, dads and children worldwide as giving life to a new generation offering peace and harmony is enough to inspire anyone!

Justin Timberlake is bringing more than just sexy back — he’s bringing generosity back as well. He’s been named the host of the Las Vegas PGA Tour event, which will be renamed the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

And it sounds like everyone wins in this game. The PGA tour is, of course, thrilled to have the popular crooner contributing his name to their organization, and JT is equally happy, saying, “Raising money to better children’s lives while playing golf? I can’t think of a better way to pass the time.”

Thirteen other celebrities have assumed hosting duties for PGA events in the past, and it’s no wonder. Golfing, charities, and Hollywood seem to go hand in hand (in hand). Legends such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., and Bob Hope precede Timberlake in hosting these events, but don’t start wondering who will take over for JT — his hosting contract obligates him to do this for five years. Between Tiger wearing those fitted shirts and JT on the greens, I just might have to start watching golf.

Hello everyone!! I’m so excited to be starting this new blog about healthy eating for you and your family. I promise to provide you with lots of great recipes and tips, but before I officially get started, I thought it would make sense to share with you my background and philosophy.

First and foremost, I am not a trained chef. That said, I do have a lot of food experience under my belt! When I was a kid, I “studied” with my Grandma Ana. She would show me how to prepare her special dishes, and when she thought I was ready, she started letting me actually help. I’ve also been a die-hard cooking show viewer since I was a kid. Believe it or not, my college application essay was all about the Frugal Gourmet!

Now (many years later), I work in PR and social marketing for food clients, but my career has almost always involved food. I worked at the Food Network, I was a food critic for three years and I was even a bread baker and a cheese buyer. I just love blogging and writing about food, and I just wouldn’t feel funny if I weren’t doing so!

I live in Chicago with my two kids and my husband, and we try to eat homecooked meals about 4-5 nights a week. It’s not always easy, but I do my best, because family dinners are just so important to me. And that is really my philosophy on food; the number one thing is to eat with people you love. I also do my best to use fresh ingredients when possible. I try to avoid processed foods, trans fats and high fructose corn syrup. I’m not always able to do so, and I am a big fan of not making myself crazy. Yes, I will take a short-cut if it will save my sanity. But, my kids know where food comes from, and they know that eating together is important. In the end, teaching them that is what is most important to me.

For most women, getting ready in the morning is often primarily about finding something clean and comfy to wear, no matter where we are going for the day. Hopefully, you are challenging yourself to reach beyond the yoga pants and tee, but I know that some days, it’s hard.

On the days when you have gotten past your pajamas and into something a little spiffier (jeans, a white shirt, cute shoes), go one step further and add a smart piece of jewelry, a little bling to brighten up your day. A distinctive cocktail ring can be just the ticket, not only because it is easy to wear but because you can see it all day and be reminded how simple it is to look stylish.

Cocktail rings are characterized by their large size and dramatic designs. Choose a bright gemstone or a simple dome or a whimsical shape; go with amethysts or synthetic sapphires or a sleek onyx. Choose from vintage rings or designer imitations; price points can range from thousands of dollars to under $20.00. Look for a ring that works with your wardrobe, both in terms of color and metals.

Wear your cocktail ring on your dominant hand, the hand you eat and drink and gesture with, for the biggest impact; put it on either your index or second finger for balance. Keep nails short and manicured, because a ring this big draws attention to your hands. Wear your cocktail ring alone, both because it will compete with other jewelry and because the whole idea is to simplify your routine.

And then take the time, during your busy day, to stop and admire your ring, and remember how wonderful it feels to know you look good.

Katie HolmesKatie Holmes used running as a way to lose baby weight, and it certainly seemed to work for her—she looks fantastic. But, is that really such a big deal? Lots of women have babies and get back into fabulous shape via exercise.

Well, she not only ran, but trained for the New York City marathon while jetsetting across the globe with hubby Tom Cruise and baby Suri and hitting red carpets and parties. Oh, and through all that, she kept her marathon plans totally under the radar. Still unimpressed?

She finished the marathon in under five and a half hours, a nice pace for first timer (and if you’re not impressed by that, try running one). And just in case you’re not impressed just yet, get this—just hours after completing the 26.2 mile run, Katie was out and about in heels for the Lions for Lambs premiere. While 40,000 others might have started the marathon alongside her, I wonder how many ended the night in something other than bedroom slippers …
